Wooden Spoon Dinner - Durham March 2007
Wooden Spoon is rugby's charity supporting mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged children and young people. Spoon has committed to over £11 million in spending for projects for children and young people. It has organised over 1,500 events and had 20,000 ties worn by its loyal members and supporters. Hardworking staff and volunteers have achieved all of this since the birth of the charity.
It all began on a fateful day in Dublin in 1983 when England’s Five Nations season ended in disaster with defeat by Ireland leaving them languishing at the bottom of the table.
A group of English supporters were presented with a Wooden Spoon by their Irish opponents to mark this historic occasion. On returning home the proposal to play golf for the spoon attracted the interest of fellow English supporters. Over 100 people attended that golf day at Farnham and by the end of the evening £8450 had been raised. The funds were cashed in for a minibus purchased for the Park Special Needs School in Aylesbury. The charity was born...
Over time the number and variety of events increased as have the number of supporters and participants. Spoon now has patronage from the four rugby home unions and royal patronage from Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal.

Barnardos Dinner - Durham September 2007
Barnardo’s North East covers Northumberland, Tyneside, Wearside, Durham and Teesside. On average we work with 11,000 children, young people and their families a year. We provide over 39 services – each one of them different. We also have 16 shops and a team of fundraisers and volunteers. We work at the heart of social disadvantage and we are proud of what we’re achieving. We have services which have led the way in developing new ideas and in providing the blueprint for others to follow on.
The range of need and consequently the range of our services are diverse – this reflects the many difficult circumstances children and young people find themselves in. Services will change, but our aim and motivation remains the same – to continue to make a real difference in people’s lives – all the children, young people and their families with whom we work. We offer help and support when a child or young person’s future is under threat – be it from homelessness, drugs, sexual abuse, disability, unemployment, prejudice, emotional problems – we deal with it all. For example: |
 |
| • |
we support families where children may be at risk from abuse of where parents simply cannot cope. |
 |
| • |
our support services for parents looking after a child with disabilities gives them a well earned break and provides a welcome change of scene for the children themselves. |
 |
| • |
we also have drop in centres which work with young people using drugs, family centres and crèche facilities, a service for young people with mental health problems and support groups for mothers whose children have been abused. |

Durham's most recent England call up Graham Onions won the County Durham Development Company Young Player of the Year and Bowler of the Year, sponsored by The Journal. Graham was the first Durham bowler to secure 50 First Class wickets and at the same time recording a career best of 5-45 against Middlesex in the Liverpool Victoria County Championship.
Gareth Breese fended off stiff competition to win Fielder or the Year, sponsored by Robert Muckle Solicitors. Breese's sharp work in the field brought him 24 catches this year, mainly from the slip cordon.
Speaking about the winners, Head Coach Martyn Moxon said, "Dale is a worthy winner of the awards. He has been an inspiration all season to the whole playing staff. Every time he takes to the field for Durham he sets an example for all the players, both in his actions on the pitch and with his leadership qualities."
"Graham Onions has had a wonderful season, developing from being a talented youngster into a proven wicket taker. His England call up at the end of the season was no more than he deserves for his hard work. Gareth has been extremely reliable at first slip for us this season, taking a number of outstanding catches." |
